There’s so many villages to visit close by you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here’s some of our favourites:

  • Guethary – In between St Jean De Luz and Biarritz on the coast, this Parisian bolt hole is old fishing village with lots of character and plenty of nice bars and restaurants a definite must on your list. Wednesday night is pelote night in the summer a truly wonderful experience.
  • Ascain is close, only five km from the site, and full of old treasures, a Roman bridge and a church;
  • Ainhoa, 22km away is, like Sare, almost implausibly lovely and has many still-intact examples of very old buildings.
  • Slightly further away is Espelette: if you like chocolate or Basque history and traditions – like hundreds of local chillies hanging outside people’s front doors, for instance – you’re not going to want to miss it.
